The Spirit Awards saw a pair of disparate dramas -- Michael Hazanavicius' silent movie "The Artist" and Jeff Nichols' doomsday tale "Take Shelter" -- lead the nominations with five each, including best picture.

Best feature nods also went to cancer comedy "50-50," family dramas "Beginners" and "The Descendants" and actioner "Drive." Film Independent's noms were announced Tuesday morning at The London in West Hollywood by Anthony Mackie and Kate Beckinsale.

Fox Searchlight - with "The Descendants," "Martha Marcy May Marlene," "Cedar Rapids," "Another Earth" and "Win Win" - led all distribs with 14 nominations, followed by Sony Pictures Classics with nine and TWC and Focus with six each. "Beginners," "The Descendants," "Martha Marcy May Marlene" and "Drive" each scored four noms, and "50-50" scored three.

The 27th edition of the Spirit Awards will be presented Feb. 25 - the day before the Oscars - at its usual location in a beachside tent in Santa Monica. To be eligible, a film must be made by a U.S. producer for under $20 million.

Lead actor nominations went to Jean Dujardin of "The Artist," Michael Shannon of "Take Shelter," Ryan Gosling of "Drive," Demian Bichir for "A Better Life" and Woody Harrelson for "Rampart." Lead actress nods went to Lauren Ambrose, "Think of Me"; Rachel Harris, "Natural Selection"; Adepero Oduye, "Pariah"; Elizabeth Olsen, "Martha Marcy May Marlene"; and Michelle Williams, "My Week with Marilyn."

Hazanavicius and Nichols received noms in the directing category along with Mike Mills ("Beginners"), Alexander Payne ("The Descendants") and Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive"). J.C. Chandor's "Margin Call" took the Robert Altman Award - given to one film for director, casting director and ensemble cast.

The 49-member Film Independent committee screened 270 movies, resulting in 44 films receiving nominations. Notable omissions of candidates receiving awards consideration included the film "Like Crazy," George Clooney and Judy Greer in "The Descendants," Glenn Close in "Albert Nobbs" and Christopher Plummer in "Beginners."

The Spirit noms were announced following Monday night's Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York, which saw a tie in the Best Feature category between "Beginners" and Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life," which was not eligible for the spirits.

"Black Swan" won the top award at the Spirits last February.

Four Spirit nominees also picked up kudos Tuesday morning from the New York Film Critics Circle, including "The Artist" as best feature, Jessica Chastain (supporting actress for "Tree of Life," "The Help" and "Take Shelter"), Hazanavicius (director for "The Artist") and Albert Brooks (supporting actor, "Drive").

Super, super delicious Homemade Caramel Apples

Which just so happen to be my specialty... from my latest feel good obsession: The Brown Eyed Baker.

Homemade Caramel Apples

Yield: 10 apples

Prep Time: 45 minutes | Chill Time: 1 hour

2 bags Caramel Bits
10 Granny Smith apples
Assorted chocolates for melting
Assorted candies, chips, etc. for rolling

1. Wash the apples, remove the stems (and any stickers!) and refrigerate them overnight.

2. Line a baking sheet with wax paper and spray with a non-stick cooking spray. Insert wooden or lollipop sticks into the center of each apple.

3. In a small saucepan, melt the caramel according to the package directions. One at a time, dip the apples into the caramel, swirling and using a spoon to get it covered. Place on the baking sheet and repeat with all of the apples. Place the apples in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.

4. In a 2-cup measuring cup (this works perfectly for this!), melt whatever chocolate you are using. I used the microwave at 50% power in 30-second increments. Have your candies and chips ready. Dip the caramel apple into the chocolate, covering it as much as possible, and then roll it in the desired toppings.

5. Apples will keep for 1 to 2 days in the refrigerator.

Note: I add 1 tablespoon of vegetable shortening per 1 cup of chocolate chips when melting. It keeps the chocolate thin (no clumping) and it dries nice and smooth.

Relationship satisfaction and outcome in women who meet their partner while using oral contraception

Abstract:

Hormonal variation over the menstrual cycle alters women’s preferences for phenotypic indicators of

men’s genetic or parental quality. Hormonal contraceptives suppress these shifts, inducing different

mate preference patterns among users and non-users. This raises the possibility that women using oral

contraception (OC) choose different partners than they would do otherwise but, to date, we know neither

whether these laboratory-measured effects are sufﬁcient to exert real-world consequences, nor what these

consequences would be. Here, we test for differences in relationship quality and survival between women

who were using or not using OC when they chose the partner who fathered their ﬁrst child. Women who

used OC scored lower on measures of sexual satisfaction and partner attraction, experienced increasing

sexual dissatisfaction during the relationship, and were more likely to be the one to initiate an eventual

separation if it occurred. However, the same women were more satisﬁed with their partner’s paternal provision, and thus had longer relationships and were less likely to separate. These effects are congruent with evolutionary predictions based on cyclical preference shifts. Our results demonstrate that widespread

use of hormonal contraception may contribute to relationship outcome, with implications for human

reproductive behaviour, family cohesion and quality of life.

Conan O'Brien is moving to TBS.
In a surprise announcement, TBS revealed this morning that the former "Tonight Show" host would join the cabler in the 11 p.m. time slot this November.

"Lopez Tonight," which currently airs there, will shift to midnight. Like "Lopez," the as-yet untitled O'Brien show will air four days a week, Mondays through Thursdays.

"In three months I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I'm headed to basic cable," O'Brien said. "My plan is working perfectly."

News was timed to the kick off of O'Brien's "Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television" tour, which starts Monday night in Eugene, Ore.

O'Brien had been widely expected to seal a deal with Fox -- and execs at the broadcast network remained optimistic last week that a deal could eventually be hammered out.

But Fox was running into serious financial roadblocks in clearing a late night yakker.

It's was a given that divisions such as the Fox TV Stations, Twentieth Television and 20th Century Fox TV would all take at least a short-term financial hit should an O'Brien latenighter become a reality for Fox.

And given the off-net sitcom contracts that Fox's O&Os -- and most of its affiliates -- have in place, it was looking more likely that an O'Brien show would air at 11:30 p.m., and even midnight in some markets, instead of 11 p.m. after Fox affils' 10 p.m. newscasts.

Considering that O'Brien exited NBC after that network downgraded his timeslot, O'Brien likely didn't want to have to wait years to secure full in-pattern clearances on Fox across the country.

TBS, on the other hand, allows O'Brien to be seen virtually nationwide, in-pattern, immediately.

According to TBS, talks began in earnest just last week -- and after "Lopez Tonight" star George Lopez personally gave O'Brien a call.

"I can't think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in," Lopez said. "It's the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy."

Turner Entertainment Networks president Steve Koonin called O'Brien "the comedic voice for a generation."

"TBS already has a huge audience of young comedy lovers, and Conan's show will give these fans even more reasons to watch our network," Koonin said.

Lopez's talk show already posts the youngest median age among all latenight talkers. Koonin said he saw an opportunity to expand on that young audience.

For decades, late-night TV has been dominated by broadcast television," Koonin said. "Now, with a young audience and a growing late-night lineup, TBS is set to be the choice of comedy fans for years to come."

Under his exit package, O'Brien is able to host a new late night show starting in September.

He's also able to start conducting TV interviews in May (with some restrictions on what he can say about NBC and the January late night kerfuffle). Given Monday's announcement, it will probably be no surprise if O'Brien gives his first sit-down chat to Lopez.

(CNN) -- Walking into school Wednesday morning was not easy for Constance McMillen. The last time she'd been there was March 11, the day after her Fulton, Mississippi, high school canceled prom rather than allow her to wear a tuxedo and attend with her girlfriend.
She didn't assume last week's spring break would cool things down. She expected stares, dirty looks and cold shoulders, and passing through the doors was daunting. Over these last two weeks, she said, she's had a hard time sleeping, can barely eat, feels anxious and -- until she saw a doctor for help -- often felt like she was "going to throw up."
"I've been very nervous about all of this," the 18-year-old Itawamba Agricultural High School senior said. "I don't like being somewhere where everyone hates me."
McMillen's name made national headlines when she, with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union, filed suit against her school and the Itawamba County School District, asking them to reinstate prom for everyone, without discrimination. A federal judge in Mississippi ruled Tuesday that while he wouldn't force the school to have a prom, which had originally been scheduled for April 2, he agreed that McMillen's First Amendment rights had been violated.
That was good news, said her attorney, Christine Sun, senior counsel with the ACLU's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender project. It set a precedent and helped broadcast an important statement, which was made stronger by virtue of where it came from, she said.
"We're in a conservative area of the country, where people tend to think we can do what we like," said Sun, who lives in New York but has traveled multiple times to Mississippi for this legal push. "This case sends a strong message that that's not going to fly anymore."
The only pending issue, Sun said, is the question of damages and the ACLU's request for attorneys' fees. An amended complaint to seek a quick resolution on this should be filed in the next 30 days, she said.
Meantime, McMillen is trying to find her new normal.

In many ways, she stands in an awkward balance. Though there are some people who support her in Fulton (population about 4,000), the overarching tension and what she described as "hostility" that she feels at school and in her community is in deep contrast to the reception and groundswell of support that's overwhelmed her nationally.
As a poster child for the rights of LGBT students, she's been asked to jump on airplanes to appear on news programs and talk shows. The Facebook fan page "Let Constance Take Her Girlfriend to Prom!" had attracted more than 414,000 fans as of Friday morning. Wealthy individuals, including Ellen DeGeneres, have offered to pay for a prom for her school. She's received a $30,000 college scholarship from an anonymous donor and Tonic.com, a digital media company in New York that's also offered her a summer internship. She's even been invited to high school proms in cities she's never visited.
"It means a lot to me," she said of the outreach from others. "The amount of support helps me to continue with the fight."
But all McMillen, who came out as a lesbian in eighth grade, ever wanted was to go to her school prom with her class, and with her girlfriend. Going to another school's prom, while a nice offer, doesn't make any sense to her.
Parents at her school are reportedly planning a "ball" for the same night that prom was intended. McMillen said she's still trying to find out if she's free to attend with her girlfriend. She won't go otherwise.
She never meant to be a spoiler for others when she sought approval to bring her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo, she said. She thought she was doing the right thing by asking in advance, since the school had stipulated in a February memo that dates must be of the opposite sex. Rather than give her permission, the school canceled the prom.
McMillen said she's learning who her "true friends" are. They're the ones who respect her for taking a stance, defend her when others talk trash about her, don't turn their backs when she approaches and aren't afraid to be seen with her. Her girlfriend, too, has remained a constant support, even though she herself hasn't gone public. McMillen also said she's blessed to have family members who shore her up even if they don't all feel comfortable with her sexual orientation.
"My grandmother doesn't believe in it [same-sex relationships] but still stands behind me no matter what," McMillen said, her southern drawl thick. "She's a conservative Christian but respects that it's my life. She doesn't think discrimination of any kind is right."
Whether she intended to or not, McMillen has inspired others -- not just nationally but in her home state, said Izzy Pellegrine, 19, a student at Mississippi State University.
"I thought for a long time I was the only gay person in the state of Mississippi," said Pellegrine, who came out at 15 and went to high school about 1½ hours from where McMillen lives.
McMillen's actions speak for others who feel unable to speak for themselves, said Pellegrine, who's a founding board member of the Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition, which helped connect McMillen with the ACLU. The grass-roots organization seeks to protect the interests of LGBT youth and will host a "second chance prom" on May 8, an event Pellegrine estimated may attract as many as 500 students, thanks in large part to the way McMillen's fight empowers others.
"Usually Mississippi is 10 or 20 years behind," Pellegrine said. "For Mississippi to be spearheading the LGBT student movement is unheard of. I, personally, and my co-workers are so proud to have it happen in our state," where "queer flight," the compulsion to leave as soon as one is able, is rampant, she said.
As for where life will take McMillen after graduation, she isn't yet sure. She's still thinking about that summer internship offer in New York and is pretty certain she'll attend Itawamba Community College for a couple years before going to one of her dream schools, the University of Southern Mississippi or UCLA. What she does know is she'd like to study and possibly pursue a career in psychology.
"I like helping people, and I like talking to people about their problems," she said. "I find the human mind and human behavior very interesting."

Sony to reboot franchise with high school story

Columbia Pictures has pulled the plug on "Spider Man 4" and will instead make a younger, cheaper installment of the superhero franchise.
Star Tobey Maguire and helmer Sam Raimi, who were both set for big paydays for "Spider Man 4," will no longer be involved in the franchise as Col moves forward with a high school-aged Peter Parker pic, which will bow theatrically in summer 2012.

Last week, Columbia confirmed that "Spider Man 4," which was scheduled to begin lensing in February and be released in 2011, was on hold indefinitely due to script problems. Columbia needs to continue actively developing "Spider Man" films or else the property will revert back to Disney/Marvel.

The studio has long prepared for the contingency of "Spider Man 4" falling apart and already has a James Vanderbilt-penned script about a teenage Peter Parker ready to shoot. That film, which has no director or star attached, is now in preproduction. The new version will likely cost far less than a "Spider Man 4" given that Columbia, which has a mandate not to give away more than 25% of the gross, won't be paying the high salaries or gross points to returning talent.

The new untitled Spider Man film will center on the webslinging teen as he grapples with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises. Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin are producing.

Studio co-chairman Amy Pascal said Col has "a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise." She added, "We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots."

Raimi, who disagreed with the studio about the direction "Spider Man 4" should move, has expressed no hard feelings. "While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job," he said.

The studio plans to hire a new helmer and a star in the coming weeks.

A Los Angeles-based version of “Law & Order” could air on NBC next season, network officials said Sunday.

NBC and Universal Media Studios Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad said she asked “Law & Order” creator and executive producer Dick Wolf if he would consider producing a Los Angeles version of the series that mixes the investigation of a crime and its prosecution.

“We’re talking about developing that,” Bromstad said during NBC’s portion of the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour in Pasadena.

Wolf “affectionately” calls the project “NOLA,” said Jeff Gaspin, NBC Universal Television Entertainment chairman.

Bromstad said it was “highly possible” that “Law & Order” would be renewed for a record 21st season. “Law & Order” and the 1955-75 CBS Western “Gunsmoke” share the record as prime-time television’s longest-running drama at 20 seasons.

NBC also announced some of its pilot plans for the 2010-11 season, including a remake of the 1974-80 detective drama “The Rockford Files” and an adaptation of the BBC series “Prime Suspect.”

NBC’s other pilots include “Undercovers,” about husband-and-wife spies co-written by “Lost” creator J.J. Abrams; “Chase,” an action-procedural drama produced by “CSI” producer Jerry Bruckheimer; “Kindreds,” about an unconventional law practice, written by David E. Kelley, whose credits include “Boston Legal,” “The Practice” and “L.A. Law”; the romantic comedy “Love Bites” and a comedy featuring radio personality Adam Carolla.

NBC is scheduled to announce its 2010-11 programming plans May 17.

The great directors who never won a directing Oscar -- Alfred Hitchcock, Charles Chaplin, Stanley Kubrick, Howard Hawks -- all made the kinds of movies that traditionally get overlooked for best picture. Add them to the helmers who've never even gotten a nomination -- Fritz Lang, Tim Burton, Brian De Palma, Sam Peckinpah, F.W. Murnau -- and one sees an obvious bias against the makers of comedies, Westerns, sci-fi, fantasy. In other words, "filmmakers who might have the top-grossing films of the year," says "Avatar" helmer James Cameron, "but aren't necessarily getting any artistic respect."
The Academy this year broadened the picture category from five to 10 nominees, which is a mixed blessing for genre directors. There will only be five directing nominations, which means that at least five helmers will personally be shut out of Oscar glory, even though their pics are being saluted. On the other hand, the spotlight will shine on films that might otherwise be overlooked -- and the directors of those films are guaranteed some attention (and sympathy) from the industry and the public.

Talking Oscars at Oscar time is considered bad form, bad luck, bad juju. Contenders won't even say the O word. "I don't think about it," says Lee Daniels, of "Precious." "It's embarrassing to talk about." Kathryn Bigelow ("The Hurt Locker") demurs. Peter Jackson ("The Lovely Bones") doesn't even respond to the question.

But Cameron, who already owns a director Oscar for "Titanic" and has "Avatar" coming out Dec. 18, is candid.

"This is the thing that fans of genre films have been kvetching about for 30 years," he says. "I remember being outraged when 'Star Wars' lost to 'Annie Hall.' I thought, 'Well, that's ridiculous. "Star Wars" changed the face of filmmaking, and "Annie Hall's" a nice little film.' I like 'Annie Hall,' but I thought that was outrageous."

But he also realizes "that the Academy had a certain perspective." It's a perspective that came under fire last year when B.O. champ and critical fave "The Dark Knight" failed to get a picture nom and helped bring about this year's changes -- and all the consequent speculation.

A pair of disparate dramas, Lionsgate's "Precious" and Sony Classics' "The Last Station," have dominated Spirit Award nominations with five each.
The duo will face off against Fox Searchlight's "500 Days of Summer," National Geographic's "Amreeka" and Focus Features' "Sin Nombre" in the best feature category.

Matt Dillon and Taraji P. Henson announced the nods Tuesday morning at the Sofitel Hotel and winners be announced March 5, two days before the Oscars. Film Independent has shifted the ceremonies to the LA Live campus in downtown from its traditional beachside site in Santa Monica, and from Saturday afternoon to Friday night.

"Precious," centered on the life of an abused teen mother, also scored nominations for director Lee Daniels, lead actress Gaborey Sidibe, supporting actress Mo'Nique and writer Geoffrey Fletcher for best first screenplay. "The Last Station," focused on Leo Tolstoy's marriage, received nods for lead actress Helen Mirren, supporting actor Christopher Plummer and Michael Hoffman, who took noms in both the director and screenplay categories.

"I think it resonated because it's about the existential problems of love and marriage and how difficult that is -- which is something everyone can relate to," Hoffman told Daily Variety.

Hoffman added that he was taken by surprise by the nominations and found out after a workout in Manhattan. "I got back to my hotel room and there were 50 emails for me," he noted.

Oscilloscope's "The Messenger" took four noms, including best first feature for director Oren Moverman, screenplay for Alessandro Camon and Moverman, supporting actor for Woody Harrelson and supporting actress for Samantha Morton.

Fox Searchlight, Oscilloscope and Sony Classics tied for most distributor nods with seven each.

In addition to Daniels and Hoffman, best director noms went to Joel and Ethan Coen for "A Serious Man," Cary Joji Fukunaga for "Sin Nombre" and James Gray for "Two Lovers."

Besides Mirren and Sidibe, female lead nods went to Maria Bello for "Downloading Nancy," Nisreen Faour for "Amreeka" and Gwyneth Paltrow for "Two Lovers." Male lead noms were received by Jeff Bridges for "Crazy Heart," Colin Firth for "A Single Man," Joseph Gordon-Levitt for "500 Days of Summer," Souleymane Sy Savane for "Goodbye Solo" and Adam Scott for "The Vicious Kind."

"The Last Station" and "The Messenger" will face competition in screenplay from Lee Toland Kirkland for "The Vicious Kind," Greg Mottola for "Adventureland" and Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber for "500 Days of Summer."

"We're jumping around with joy right now," Neustadter told Daily Variety. "I think we connected with the voters because our film really did have a singular vision. Everyone wanted to make the same movie."

Sony Classics' "An Education" scored a nom in the best foreign film, the only category in which the British/French production was eligible. It faces competition from France's "A Prophet," Sweden's "Everlasting Moments," South Korea's "Mother" and Chile's "The Maid."

"I think this represents a real endorsement for 'An Education' in all the categories," said Sony Classics chief Tom Bernard.

"A Serious Man" was announced Tuesday as winner of the Robert Altman Award, given to a director, casting director and ensemble cast.

Paramount's surprise hit "Paranormal Activity," which has grossed $107 million domestically from a $15,000 budget, received a nom for best first feature. It will face "A Single Man," "Crazy Heart," "Easier with Practice" and "The Messenger."

"Paranormal Activity" didn't get a nod for the John Cassavetes Award to honor the best feature made for under $500,000. Those noms went to "Big Fan," "Humpday," "The New Year's Parade," "Treeless Mountain" and "Zero Bridge."

Summit's "The Hurt Locker," which dominated Monday night's Gotham Awards, wasn't eligible this year. It earned Spirit nominations last year for actors Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie.

Thoughts from my Homestate

I know...I know... When you meet someone and they announce "Yeah, I'm from Boston" you often begin to think of clam-chowder slinging male of the Irish persuasion, he is referred to as "Southie" by his friends, because he is, of course from South Boston. His older brother is an RA at the same college yet somehow has suspiciously red hair and red beard and wears a newsies cap and kilt. They spend their weekends like the guys on Boondock Saints. Sure we have those...

We also have those guys who are still wearing New England Patriots Starter jackets, yeah they have season tickets to see Brady jiggle around Gillette Stadium in his special NFL spandex and panties, they drink 15 Coors Lights a game "the official game sponsor" (is it?) and love their chili dogs. They spit the leftover, beer-soaked bits and pieces of said chili dog out from between their teeth at you as they drunkenly try to ask you where the closest beer tent is. Then they oogle and grin at you with wet, red-glazed eyes as they walk away and in a "shout-whisper" say to their friends "Man, she sooo wanted to ____ my ______!"

But we also have quite an amazing little, should we call it a subculture? Take a stroll through the rickety, red lanterned, cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill or down a dragon-studded, paper lantern strung avenue in Chinatown, you'll find speakeasys, underground casinos, chain restaurants that turn into brothels after hours, paraplegics hanging out in the middle of Downtown Crossing..in the middle of the night... Anyhow I could go on forever...but instead I wanted to share a few "Best of Craigslist" ads that I came across... I noticed that the titles grabbing my attention were all coming from the Boston locale.... It was a pleasant reminder that the place I come from is full of looneys and whores. I feel at ease....

Take these 2 fine lasses from my college (Emerson College). I should have known what I was getting into going to that damn school from the moment that my tour guide said "Welcome to the Ivy League for Misfits". WOOF.... Maybe I shouldn't post this... it's probably 2 of my hooker friends.

Another fine example of the neato creeps that lurk in Boston...

Keep in mind....there is a bike/jogger path that runs along the entire Charles River, the entire "park by the river" is wide open and not all that expanse of an area. With that said the Charles River is really beautiful and romantic...in fact my ex-boyfriend and I used to lay out on the esplanade by the river all the time... Looking back..that creepo was probably him... aaah..damn... shouldn't have posted this one either...
